It has been used in the Western Church since around the late 6th century.〔(Catholic encyclopedia: Litany of the Holy Name )〕 In the 15th century Saints Bernardino of Siena and John Capistrano promoted it and in the 16th century Pope Sixtus V granted indulgences for its recitation . The structure of the litany is similar to the Litany of Loreto. It begins with the invocation of the Holy Trinity and then enumerates a list of praises referring to Jesus as God and as man.
